Beyond Meat has partnered with travel restaurateur SSP Group to launch the Beyond Burger at airport and train station bars across the UK.

The burger will roll out at 13 locations, including Brigg & Stow at Bristol Airport and Camden Bar at London Stansted, from October 24. It will then launch at six more bars from December. Customers will be able to order the plant-based patty in a bun with lettuce, tomato, onion, house burger sauce, and a side of chips.

The Beyond Burger is high in protein at 16g per 100g, and made with ingredients that are Kosher, Halal, and vegan certified. It also has a significantly lower environmental impact than a comparable beef patty.

“We strive to offer as much choice as we can for customers across all of our outlets,” said Meredith Ford, Head of Sustainability at SSP UK & Ireland. “We’re proud to be working in collaboration with Beyond Meat to do this while also supporting our target that 30% of our own brand main meal options are plant-based or vegetarian to drive positive change across the food travel sector.”

“Important step”

Europe remains the strongest market for US-based Beyond Meat; last November, it was reported that the company’s international sales were growing significantly, largely driven by European demand for its burgers and nuggets at McDonald’s.

In May, Beyond Meat introduced a new product in the UK, the Spicy Beyond Burger Jalapeño. The brand also revealed earlier this year that it was overhauling the Beyond Burger and Beyond Beef recipes to improve their nutritional credentials, in response to growing consumer demand for less processed products. However, the new recipes do not yet appear to be available in the UK.

“Bringing our Beyond Burger to the UK food service travel sector with SSP is an important step to help even more of the UK reduce their animal meat consumption,” said Steve Parsons, UK Regional Sales Manager of Food Service at Beyond Meat. “We want to give people everywhere access to delicious and nutritious plant-based meat options. Whether travelling on holiday or needing a great tasting burger after a long work commute, with a Beyond Burger, passengers can all continue to eat what they love, no sacrifice required.”
